I Love art a lot so for my self portrait involves things like paintbrushes and canvas and patterns I think are cool, so I hope to be able to combine those in a way that shows my love for artistic things. As for the specific idea of my project, I don't exactly know how I'm going to accomplish it yet. I'm not exactly sure if my photos will help me achieve the artistic feel I want to go for, but I'm sure I'll be able to do something awesome with them.
Tool: Dodge and Burn
What does it do? Dodging and burning is a process that helps to alter the exposure of your photograph. Dodging decreases exposure to lighten your photographs. Burning increases exposure to darken areas in a photograph. Where do you find it on the toolbar (what does it look like)? It is the fourteenth icon down on your left tool bar. Dodge tool is shaped like a magnifying glass. The burn tool looks like a hand forming the letter o. Why would you use it? To manipulate the exposure of your photo. It can be used to create contrast and drama making lighter areas even lighter and darker areas even darker. How do you use it? Click on it on your tool bar or use the hot key. You use dodge to lighten areas and burn to darken. You can then choose what areas you're manipulating whether it be midtones, highlights, or shadows. You can change and alter your brush (softer/harder, size, etc.). You also may alter the amount of exposure. You click and hold down on the areas you are altering. Hot key: The hotkey for the photo edit section where the dodge and burn tools is the letter O on your keyboard. Holding down shift while pressing O will allow you to shuffle through the dodge, burn, and sponge tools. Challenge: Have everybody choose one of their own photographs, preferably a close-up photo. Using dodge and burn enhance highlights and darken shadows to add more contrast to the photograph. My name was planned out for me since before I was born, since before my parents had even met. My dad is the one who named me. He knew ever since he was seventeen years old that his first kid would be a girl named Alex. He just knew. I think a person's name can help form their character, but I do not think it determines their character. I think maybe it is possible to adapt to fit our names but our names do not change us simply because we have that name. My name holds a lot of meaning for me. It kind of makes me feel like I'm meant to do really great things based on it's meaning and origin. It also makes me feel special because of the way that I got it.
The title of this blog is a quote by Henry Cartier-Bresson that says: "Your first 10,000 photographs are your worst." This is my favorite quote when it comes to photography. I like it because it reminds me of something my dad told me not that long ago. He said, "The whole idea is to go out and take thousands of photos to get one good one." I just can relate to that so well. Photography isn't a one time get it perfect type thing, it's trial and error. It just takes a little patience and a good eye.
